Okay.........let's see what I have learned. If I remember correctly, New Zealand smoked Wales previously by 50 +. Now they have stated that they will start their 1st stringers as preparation for the playoffs, while Wales will be playing their bench warmers for fear of injury (they want their starters for the quater final game against England). I should have taken New Zealand -46 @ 10/11 (SKYBET) last night as I see it is now 8/11. Either way, I figure the Welsh are in for a spanking.

Let's see if the 'Rugby Guru's' agree.

Scotland vs Fiji

I really cant wait for this game. Pre-tournament, I could not have predicted how Scotland would be so poor in this tournament. They have a first class coaching set up in Ian McGeechan and Jim Telfer, but the bottom line is that they do not have the players to compete on the world stage at present, and if they do, they are few and far between. Their best hope here is to beat the Fijians up front. They have a genuine world class prop in Tom Smith, and a promising back row player in Simon Taylor. However, behind the scrum they are drastically short of options. It is an admission on McGeechans part that he has thrown winger Chris Paterson in at fly half tomorrow as a last throw of the dice, but you are hard pressed to identify where any of their attacking options will come from.
Things could not be so different for Fiji, who have more flair than Ben Affleck in a strip joint, and more attacking options than General Schwarzkopf. They are boosted by the return of Auckland Blue flier Rupeni Caucaunibuca, who has the potential to cause that Scottish backline more problems then they can handle. On the other wing, you have Aisea Tuilevu, and the backline is complimented perfectly by the safe and sound kicking skills of Nicky Little at ten. It is up front, I have worries, but I am relying on their big players performing to thwart the Scots. The performances of Greg Smith and Joeli Veitayaki are vital. If these guys can allow the Fijian backs enough ball, you could be looking at the first major upset of the tournament to date.

2 Points Fiji (+11) at 5/6 with PaddyPower

I am passing on the Samoa-South Africa game tomorrow. I cannot back the SpringBoks with any confidence, as they under perform so often when faced with the big stage, but Samoa minus Terry Fanolua are not the force they could be, and I feel they might struggle tomorrow, with the world expecting so much.

I have a strong lean on the Australia-Ireland game, but am going to sleep on it, and maybe post my play tomorrow morning after the Fiji game.

Good Luck :)

Quick post with weekend plays:

Scotland v Fiji - no bet - had game priced at 11 - true the Scots are rubbish, but Fiji are worse. Could see this being close for a long way, but for handicapping purposes anything could happen late on! If Fiji lose their heads they could get picked off, but if they are still in the game their flowing attack could pick holes in the Scots defence at will. Too iffy for me - Fiji straight up probably wouldn't be the worst bet in the world, but I'll stay in bed :)

South Africa v Samoa - no bet again - couldn't back SA + no way of knowing how Samoa will perform - they can't possibly repeat what they did against England (they'll win if they do) - think the Boks will deliberately slow the game up to take the sting out of the Samoans.

Australia v Ireland - 2pts Ireland (+21) Coral - I realise that if Australia get on top early this could get very messy as Ireland will have an eye on the 1/4 final with France. However, they'll be a lot of Irish fans there too + I hope that pride will stir them on. I had the handicap at 16 - Australia appear to have improved on their early year form, but thumping Namibia and Romania counts as little more than training games. Argentina gave them a good game, but can Irelands pack be as strong as the Pumas - I doubt it, but the Irish backs are better. Should be a great game regardless.

One early play for Sunday

2pts NZ (-46) 4/5 UK Betting v Wales - full strength Kiwis vs 2nd string Welsh who've admitted their very much thinking about (losing to :moon: ) England in the 1/4s. This could turn in to a riot + back fire badly on the Welsh I feel. Posting now as the lines already on the move. Very interested to hear crookys views on this one ;)

Good luck

Hoss,

I will post my thoughts on the spread tomorrow, as I am trying not to think about it! :(

However, I will say that to play against the All Blacks in a Rugby World Cup, should be the pinnacle of any players career. Any respect Steve Hansen gained over here after our win over Italy, has been banished by his selction. He is selecting players purely on the basis that he is giving them experience of the international arena, and yet this is a huge game at this level.

As far as I am concerned the guy has lost the plot, and has to go. He just does not understand what Welsh rugby is all about. You do not experiment with your team in a tournament of this nature. You should know your best fiftenn, and barring injuries play that best fifteen every game, in a tournament where you only play once a week. I watched Max Boyce performing at the Sydney Opera house tonight, and he was talking about the importance of a Wales-New Zealand fixture, and yet a person who does not even belong to our country, is set to make us the laughing stock of the northern hemisphere with his team selection.

It could get ugly....I think it is fair to say that I will probably pass on the game, as I cannot even put my wallet in front of supporting Wales in the way I normally do. What I will say is that I am dreading the effect a heavy defeat would have on confidence in the Welsh camp, paticularly as seven of the team selected will probably face England.

There is my rant.....off to bed now, as some of us have to get up to watch Scotland-Fiji in five hours!! :p

Hoss,

Not doing as well as you as I'm actually 5/5 but up 4pts (Go Uruguay) :D

The three games today:

Scot/Fiji - Leave me out of this, totals the whole lot.

I think Scot will win the match but I have no trust in either sides attack or defence

SAF/Samoa - 1pt Saf -18.5

Samoa were overatted. England didn't get their hands on the ball for the 1st 15 mins and they had a very weak defence centre pairing. Hougaard is the key here. If he backs himself (and what I've seen so far tells me he will) the Samoan Defence won't know what to expect. Plus the SAf second row are mean and keen

Aust/Ire - No bet

Can't for the life of me make head or tail of this game. One minute I like the minus, the next the plus. Originally had the game at 23, but that was before I saw the teams.
Think the betting is right and will alternate between Guiness and Calrton Draught

:toast:
